At CityVets, we pride ourselves on giving all our patients the best start in life by encouraging preventative health care, positive handling and education of owners on the importance of settling your pet in to their environment and socialisation of pets from an early age. We offer ‘puppy parties’ at our Alphington branch, a three-week course that introduces new puppy owners to the basics of puppy socialisation and training. We also aim for each vet visit to be a positive experience and so our patients should look forward to a visit to us, whether it is for a healthy check-up or in times of illness, we want the visit to be as stress free as possible.

Sometimes, however, we do not know the history of our pets and previous events may alter a pet's behaviour. Sometimes pets can be strong willed and some just need extra reassurance and guidance on how to be a responsible citizen! If you are struggling with your pet's behaviour, a check over with one our vets is the first thing to do as sometimes illness and pain can cause behavioural changes.

Behaviour issues are anything you find your animal is doing that is causing you, them or others a problem. Sometimes the behaviour exhibited is ‘normal’, but it is displayed out of context and considered undesirable. Below are some of the more common problems owners seek help to overcome:

  • Noise issues
  • Destructiveness
  • House training
  • Travel Problems
  • Chasing
  • Nervousness
  • Aggression
  • Control Problems
  • Separation Issues

A behavioural consultation can be arranged by referral from any of our vets. Second opinions and external referrals from other clinics are also welcome. A referral form is completed outlining the behavioural issues and Elaine will arrange a mutually suitable time for the consultation. Appointments are usually held in your own home and can last up to three hours. Where possible, all family members involved in the pet should be present. A detailed history of the problems of concern and an assessment of the animal will occur, a treatment plan agreed including any follow up visits or veterinary help, if medication is needed. We hope that together we can help make you and your pets lives more enjoyable and stress free!

Elaine Brooks MSc CABC CCAB, works with the CityVets team to offer a Companion Animal Behaviour Referral Service. Elaine has worked professionally with horses, dogs and other companion animals her entire working life. She says;

‘For many of us the bond we develop with our companion animals is as strong as those we develop with our human companions. Each relationship being unique, shaped by the past and maintained by the present. Respecting this fact is at the very heart of my approach to the work I do.’

‘My primary goal is to create, promote and enhance human-companion animal relationships that are based on mutual trust, respect and understanding. By working together using methods that are effective whilst being humane I will help you to identify realistic expectations and achieve your goals so that ultimately you too can enjoy the wonderful rewards pets can bring.’

Elaine’s practical experience includes a lengthy and rewarding career with the Guide Dogs for the Blind, preparing dogs to work as guides and teaching people to become trainers. She taught Equine Assisted Therapy to 16–25-year-olds with learning and behavioural challenges at The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy (FCRT) and as a volunteer trainer with ‘DogAid’. Elaine has an MSc in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling (CABC) from the University of Southampton and is a Certified Training Partner with the world-renowned Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behaviour.
